描写学派还可以为繁荣翻译实践、丰富翻译手段提供强有力的理论武器。比如，汉诗英译中韵律与内容的矛盾如何处理的问题一直困扰着翻译界。以前，大概（只）有两种办法，一是如Arthur Waley那样，保留内容舍弃韵脚；一是如许渊冲那样，保留韵脚而部分舍弃内容（当然，许教授对这个说法不会接受，他会认为自己译出了原诗的“意美”）。尽管大家都知道，这两者是不可兼顾的，但是，从来没有人加以承认，从而大胆地只保留语音（包括韵脚）而完全放弃内容。随着描写学派的问世，竟然真的出现了所谓的语音翻译（phonetic translation），请看下例：
原诗（选自Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland）：
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty (Dumpty) together again.
法语译文：
Un petit d’un petit
S’etonne aux Halls
Un petit d’un petit
Ah! Degre te fallent
Indolent qui ne sort cess
Indolent qui ne se mene
Qu’importe un petit d’un petit
Tout Gai de Reguenne. 12
这种翻译，只顾及原文的音位，而把其它的因素，包括与忠实密不可分的内容统统抛到了一边。人们之所以会想到这种被称为“语音翻译”的翻译手段，首先是因为他们清醒地认识到，根据描写学派的翻译不完整性的理论，要同时保留原文的韵脚又要完整地传达原文的内容在理论上讲是不可能的。很显然，没有理论的指导，就不可能出现这种翻译手段。赵元任在翻译同篇小说的另一首诗歌时，用了字位翻译法，生造出了许多汉字，去翻译原文中的许多生造出的英文单词。 13 可以说他的译法与上面的译法有异曲同工之妙。赵译在描写学派盛行之前，反映出赵先生的天才。初读赵译，常有“这也是翻译吗”的困惑。如今学了描写翻译学派理论同时也深深感到翻译的手段、研究翻译的天地其实要比我们 想象中的多得多也要开阔得多。
